Oh how I understand! My mom was verbally abusive and as a child, I had nowhere to go and no one to turn to for help. I simply had to endure. Things changed when I became an adult because I chose to make a change: I stopped listening to her barrage of hurtful words. My first time in counseling, that Christian counselor helped me find the courage and the words to say to Mom as I hung up on her abusive phone calls. Seriously, I came up with a script to use – one that was truthful and did not abuse her in return – I wrote that script on postit notes and placed one near each phone in our house. I enlisted my husband to not let me call her back after the hang up. It was a beginning of setting some boundaries with her. She was not a believer and she never understood. I had to keep her at arm’s length my entire life, and she died not having ever reconciled with me. Lord, I pray for our sister who is in this difficult situation. Help her set her boundaries and no longer accept abuse/no longer play the good daughter game, which has been hurting her for far too long. Help her Lord find Your way to speak truth with love. Set her free Father!
