November 19, 2022 at 12:51 amWhen most modern readers open their Bibles, they do it with the belief that they are reading a book that is solemn and serious. The Bible contains, of course, the Good News and is, as such, full of uplifting and inspirational stories. Within its pages, there are tales of people who overcome incredible adversity, anecdotes about miraculous healings and the amazing power of forgiveness. Those who read the Bible are confronted with stories of God’s grace and love. They also find within the Bible advice on how to live, how to worship and how to approach God. As such, the Bible is often approached with a sense of awe or a serious, studious focus. Rarely does anyone open the Bible with the anticipation of being entertained. Why is that????? I would say that telling Peter to go catch a fish and he would find a coin in its mouth to pay their temple tax was pretty funny. Also, when asked if it is right to pay taxes to Caesar, asking them whose picture was on the coinage was pretty humorous. However, consider that Jesus is the Word of God. The whole of the Old Testament is an expression of Jesus’ character and nature, and it made frequent use of humor. My favorite was when Elijah asked the priests of Baal to shout louder because maybe their God was asleep. 😴 The second funniest thing was David pretending to be crazy and foaming at the mouth in order to save his skin from a hostile neigboring king.😆😫😂
