October 21, 2023 at 11:57 amHis Cherie-I understand your concern about going on MS medication and wanted to share my story to hopefully give you hope and another prospective. I was diagnosed with MS in ‘93 when I was barely 20. Scared and young I wanted to do whatever the doctors said knowing a close family friend who did not fair well because there was not medication for him to take at that time. I was having similar symptoms as you numb feet and hands. I had one option for a medication and it was in the trial phase. The medication was not perfect but it slowed the progression of my symptoms. Fast forward 10 years. I had to stop medication while I was pregnant and lost most of my vision. But thanks be to God steroids restored most of my vision. Fast forward another 16ish years my 13 year old daughter was diagnosed with MS. We were told there was a very slim chance if at all that I would pass this to my children. But she was diagnosed. This time I read everything about the medication I could and the side effects. Being a pediatric there was only 1 approved. It slowed the progression and she took it until she could take the adult medication. Last MRI shows less lesions and has not shown symptoms since her diagnosis. Thank you God! I have had the opportunity to try a handful of medications and now I am stable. With research and modern technology the MS therapies have improved exponentially. Even showing good results for one medication that can be taken up to 6 months while pregnant, good news for my daughter! Also good news age has helped to quiet the disease progression! There are about 23 medications out on the market now. I am not sure of the reason you are uncertainty of starting medication but the good news is if the medication is not working or has undesirable sides there are many options. Reading up on medication can be scary it helps to trust your doctor. There are support groups through the Rocky Mountain MS Society that can walk you through your options. I hope this helps? Praying for you! Please let us know how you are doing. Yours sister in Christ.
