SmeePrayers: 16Requests: 11
February 5, 2023 at 4:22 amSometimes I am so foolish to forget I have brothers and sisters who are available to pray for each other if we would only ask. I do the same thing with the Lord.. I forget to ask when facing difficult situations.
A few months ago, the owner of the apartment complex where I live fired all of our management and maintenance people and then brought in a new management company and team. We desperately needed new management and maintenance people, but the solution has been a nightmare for us. The complex is for 60 yrs and up and disabled people. Most people here are on some kind of rent assistance through HUD Section 8 or USDA Rural Development as their (and my) incomes fall far below the poverty rate.
Since the new management team took over, they have been making life miserable for many of us, using intimidation, fear, threats, alledged lease “violations” in an effort to force us out. I’m not one to sit back and let them bully me, but they are attacking several of my friends, too. My friend Peggy was accosted publicly in the parking lot in front of other neighbors and screamed at and berated by the maintenance man, who I guess thinks it’s ok to be abusive to elderly and disabled people. But he is just doing what he’s been told to do by management who have already demonstrated the same abusive tactic with myself and other neighbors. Management also informed Peggy that even though she is currently under a Section 8 lease, (she just renewed her lease in Sept.) they were doubling her rent and requiring her to pay more than half of her total monthly income. This is illegal.. and she refused to pay any increase, but they are threatening her with eviction.
There is little or no recourse within the law for tenants in Texas. The law protects the landlords. I have personally been discriminated against because of my disability on multiple occasions, and while I have fought back and won, the harassment continues every time they are here on site (M W F). I’ve been refused accommodation to park my wheelchair accessible van. I was forced to pay a deposit for my emotional support animal. These are both violations of the ADA. I’ve been yelled at and bullied, but as I said I don’t tolerate it. I have contacted attorneys, but they want $1000 to $2000 dollars to take the case. If I had that kind of money, I’d just move.
In any event, please pray on our behaves (myself and several neighbors) who are being subjected to this abuse, that God will intervene on behalf and either resolve the conflicts or help us find other affordable housing.
