October 10, 2021 at 2:44 pmUPDATE 10/10/21 Pastor Walt continues to make baby step progress He has an infection in his sputum from the lungs. They are giving antibiotics for that. His bride continues to ask for continued prayers for his complete healing, that his lungs will continue to soften and that he can breathe on his own. This morning they said his oxygen level was 68% so they’re treating that of course would be oxygen. His bride is asking for a small thing in prayer, that he old house continues to operate properly because she doesn’t know how to repair it, as Walt always has, and that the appliance to continue to work correctly without problems. She says it’s a small thing, but yet a big thing at the same time, but pales in comparison to his health. His bride thanks everyone, everywhere for their prayers and have its them for Walt’s healing. 🙏🙏🙏

October 12, 2021 at 4:59 pmUPDATE: Tuesday, October 12 — Day 26/27 with Covid, Day 19 in the hospital, Day 11 intubated in ICU.
Oxygen at 55% this morning and pressure at 8. All of his stats are about the same as yesterday except for his white blood cell count, which increased a fair amount overnight. He’s also running a low-grade fever.
A doctor called yesterday afternoon and scared me, saying they can’t get whatever the bacterial infection in his lungs to improve and he isn’t getting better — when the doctor today told me he’s holding his own, I asked about that call. He said some doctors are alarmists who don’t give anything a chance to work before jumping to something else.
He said that, while Walt is an extremely sick man, he’s still holding his own, and some numbers (like his oxygen and pressure) are looking better. Yes, there is an infection present, but they are working to treat it and want to give this plan time to work. A nurse (who didn’t overhear that conversation) confirmed what he said afterward. Basically, he is still very sick and his lungs are still way too stiff. While the infection is definitely a concern, he’s currently holding his own. They’re going to flip him this afternoon for an x-ray and are hoping they can leave him there. He tends not to like it — his oxygen usually dips and they have to move him back onto his stomach again, but they want to keep trying.
The nurse said she’d be happy to call me later and let me know how he handles the x-ray and being on his back.
Please continue to pray for healing in his lungs, for this particular infection, and for continued protection of his other organs, which are all doing fine at the moment (again, relative to Covid). Thank you all!THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR PRAYERS

October 13, 2021 at 3:25 pmWednesday, October 13 — Day 27/28 with Covid, Day 20 in the hospital, Day 12 intubated in ICU. They flipped him on his back for an x-ray yesterday and wanted to leave him as long as he could tolerate it. For the past week or so, as soon as they put him on his back, his pulse ox level immediately plummets into the 70s. He stayed on his back all afternoon and overnight and was still there this morning when I got there. They did say that his oxygen is up to 85%, pressure 10, so they need to move him back to his stomach today and let him rest again. On his back and at those settings, his pulse ox is hanging out 89-91. (On his tummy over the past few days, he’s been running about 55%/8 pressure/pulse ox mid-90s.) They’ve switched his antibiotic back to one he was on earlier this week; it seems to work for him better than the one he’s been on lately. His white blood cell count fell overnight after rising each day for the past several days. It’s still high, but it’s dropping. Yesterday’s x-ray showed a slight increase in infection levels. They did another one overnight that matched it. He had a 103 fever overnight; now it’s at 100. The doctor told me that his biggest concerns are definitely his oxygen levels and the infection in his lungs. His other organs are doing well. As usual, a little good, a little bad, and a long way to go. Thank you for your continued prayers! (I apologize that my post-visit updates aren’t very coherent sometimes. I type them up very quickly after getting back to school, while my kids are in Quiet Time. However, Quiet Time isn’t very quiet . . . .)

October 14, 2021 at 12:09 pmThursday, October 14 — Day 28/29 with Covid, Day 21 in the hospital, Day 13 in the ICU.
He was back on his tummy today at 60%, pressure 10, and pulse ox ranging from 91-92 while I was there. He really isn’t a big fan of being on his back and tends to not tolerate it well, so he usually hangs out on his stomach. He does need to progress to the point where he can tolerate being on his back.
His white blood cell count continues to rise, but he isn’t running a fever today, and the three cultures they ran yesterday morning aren’t showing any growth of anything yet (they take 3 days to fully grow, but no signs of anything after 1 hopefully says something).
His liver levels have almost returned to normal, and his other organs continue to look good.
The doctor called me on the way home and told me the same things that the nurse had told me — basically, what I just typed. He also said that he’s holding steady for today.
We will take holding steady.
Please continue to pray for healing of this infection and that his lungs would clear and soften up.

October 15, 2021 at 12:20 pmUPDATE – CONTINUED THANKS FOR YOUR PRAYERS 🙏🙏🙌🙌
Friday, October 15 — Day 29/30 with Covid, Day 22 in the hospital, Day 14 in the ICU.
Lots to pray about today. He IS holding steady overall, so that’s good.
He was on his tummy when I was there, with his oxygen at 60% and his pressure at 10. As I was leaving, they were making preparations to flip him on his back to see if he can handle it. He also has a rash on his tummy from all of the contact with the bed, so they’re hoping they can let that dry out for a while.
His sputum culture is growing something now, so they’ve added a new antibiotic for that, in addition to switching up the one he was on. The other two cultures they took on Wednesday morning are still clear.
They’re doing a scan of his heart this afternoon. He’s showing an irregular heartbeat, but at this point they do not think it’s something they’ll need to treat. They want to scan and make sure. Kidneys and liver continue to look good.
His white blood cell count has fallen some, but it’s still high.
Final analysis for today, quoting his doctor — “For a critically ill patient, he’s doing okay.”
Thank you for your continued prayers! All five of us (Walt, our 3 kids, and me) appreciate them very much.KathyNPrayers: 64Requests: 16

October 16, 2021 at 6:22 pmUPDATE .. Saturday, October 16 — Day 30/31 of Covid, Day 23 in the hospital, Day 15 on vent. He’s been on his back for 24 hours now! His vent is set at 65%, pressure 10, and he’s holding a pulse ox in the low 90s. They’re going to monitor the pulse ox and keep him on his back for as long as it’s feasible. He looked like, if he were conscious, he would have been comfortable in the position they had him in. Other than the setting and all the hookups, he looked exactly as he does when he falls asleep watching TV in his recliner — the angle, the way his legs were positioned, the way his arms were positioned, everything. His rash is improving. The infectious disease doctor switched up his antibiotics yesterday, and he seems to be responding. No fever today. His white blood cell count is up from yesterday, but not as high as the day before. A lot of the labs are running late today, so no word on some things. All of the batteries were dead on the walkie-talkies, so I could only watch him sleep — so I watched him sleep until they kicked me out. There weren’t any doctors around at the hospital itself this morning, so his nurse told me that he’s holding steady, and then the doctor called with the rest of this information just as I got home and sat down to write this. He seemed in a hurry, though friendly, and I forgot to ask if he knew specifics about the infection showing in his sputum. When he called and asked me how I was doing, I said, “I’m okay today” — and he responded with, “Well, Walt’s okay today, too!” So there we are. Walt’s okay today, too! Thank you for your continued prayers. Please pray that all infection would clear, that his lungs would soften up and be able to work independently, that all of his other organs and systems would continue to be protected, and for his medical team. We greatly appreciate all of the support we’re receiving and the prayers going up from so many people worldwide. We are grateful to all of you.
