October 29, 2021 at 8:12 pmFriday, October 29 — Day 43/44 of Covid, Day 36 in the hospital, Day 28 in ICU, Day 4 with trach When I got there this morning, his vent was up to 65%, PEEP 10 and his pulse ox was 92. They told me that they won’t start to reduce his sedation until he can manage lower than that. Soon, though, his pulse ox went up to 94, so they were able to reduce it to 60/8 while I was there. He was holding at a 92 pulse ox when I left. I was concerned when I got there because he had both a fan pointed at him and a rag on his forehead, so I knew he had a fever. Thankfully, it was only 99.6. He tested negative for Covid early this morning, and talked about testing him again today while I was there. If the second test is negative and if they have an available room in the regular ICU, the chaplain said they’ll move him today and I can go back after school this afternoon! I’ll be able to go in his room and stay as late as 9:00!!! Trying not to get my hopes up, as she said she is pretty sure they don’t have a room. (Somebody needs to do exceptionally well and graduate from ICU right now so Walt can have their room.) I’m really excited about being able to stay up there longer and go in his room, but I’m also really excited about not having to leave school in the middle of the day. It’s hard on my kids. (FRIDAY EVENING UPDATE: I was not given correct information on that. Only one test today. It was negative. Will test again tomorrow!) Even though they haven’t reduced his sedation due to his vent levels, they’ve kept him off his paralytic. The nurse said he bit down on a tool she had in his mouth this morning. While another nurse was suctioning him, I saw him jerking his shoulder as if trying to take her out (he’s restrained). This is the first movement I have seen out of him at all since he was intubated on October 2. After I was told that he won’t qualify for an LTAC yesterday, I got another call from the lady while I was driving home. She said that there’s an LTAC in East Texas that has successfully used our insurance, so she’s going to try again with Abilene and see if he can get in there. She said she was on the phone with the lady from Abilene and said something along the lines of, “You really need to try. This man’s a pastor, and God’s already started breaking down walls for him.” (I’m not sure what that means. To my knowledge, this lady doesn’t know anything about Walt and he’s a total stranger to her — but that’s what she said.) This morning, one of the ICU doctors said that he had heard that I had heard (follow that?) that Walt might be going to the south campus. I said that yes, I had heard that it would be where he goes if the LTAC doesn’t work out. He said, “I’m not going to sign off on that. If he can’t go to an LTAC, then I want him here. There’s not a full-time pulmonologist over there (south campus), and with everything his lungs have been through, I’m going to insist he have access to one.” And that means that, for now at least, it looks like he’ll either be going to Abilene or another floor in his current hospital for his rehab. And that’s what I know today. Please pray that all infections in his lungs would clear, that his lungs would soften, that his other organs and systems would remain healthy, and for wisdom and strength on the part of his medical team. Thank you!

October 30, 2021 at 9:31 pmSaturday, October 30 — Day 44/45 with Covid, Day 37 in the hospital, Day 29 in ICU, Day 5 with trach — As I posted earlier, I had to stand out in the hallway with the walkie talkie because he tested positive this morning. I was really hoping for that to change today. His vent was set at 60%/8PEEP and his pulse ox was around 91 the whole time I was there. They will not proceed with waking Walter until he can manage better than that. (He was down to 50% yesterday afternoon, but needs to be able to stay there instead of just hitting it once in a while.) They are hopeful they can start tomorrow. His white blood cell count was up a little to 16.4 and he’s running another low grade fever, but the nurse said they’re in the process of reducing his antibiotics, so that’s to be expected and nothing to worry about. (I’m not sure why they’re reducing his antibiotics if he’s still showing infection; I only think of questions hours later. That’s how I roll.)🙄 I texted Walt’s brother this morning and asked if there were any games Walt would plan on watching today if he were home. Two of them were on the same channel, so I asked the nurse if she would please put the TV on that station. She immediately said, “Somebody must think he likes reality TV. Every time I come on shift, that’s what’s on. I’m happy to put it on football for him!” Today’s chaplain was new to me. He gave me exactly thirty minutes and not one minute more. Saturdays are my best day to stay longer, so that was kind of stinky — but I’m thankful for the 30 minutes I got. Basically, we’re holding steady. Walt seems to like doing that. Do better, hold steady . . . do a bit worse, scare me while you hold steady . . . do a bit better, hold steady . . . hold steady . . . hold steady . . . hold steady. I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised. After all, he’s a very steady man. . . . but generally he’s not this pokey. Please pray for healing in his lungs, for the infection(s) to leave, for continued health and strength in all of his organs and systems (overall, things have returned to normal levels), and for wisdom and direction on the part of his medical team. Thank you!

October 31, 2021 at 1:01 pmSunday, October 31 — Day 45/46 with Covid, Day 38 in the hospital, Day 30 in ICU, Day 6 with trach I’m seeing a definite pattern on Sundays — it’s hard to find anyone to tell you much. Walter’s vent was set at 60%/8PEEP when I got there, and he was running a pulse ox of 91. These are the exact stats as when I got there yesterday, but the paperwork taped to the window shows that he was up to 70%/8 at 6:00 this morning. This means there are no plans to wake him yet. 70% is going the wrong direction. They need him to tolerate 40%-50%. His white blood cell count is back up to 18 today. I noticed that he wasn’t restrained and asked the nurse about it. He just told me that they untied him because he isn’t reacting to anyone working with him today. I do not know if this is no big deal, or if it’s because he’s not doing well and isn’t able to react. By the time I realized it could mean that, the nurse had gone somewhere. Please pray that the infection would leave his lungs and that his lungs would soften. Pray that he would be able to tolerate the lower vent settings; we can’t move forward until he can. Pray that the rest of his body would continue to be healthy and strong. Pray for wisdom and direction for his medical team. Pray for negative Covid tests so I can go into his room and see him in person and at regular hours. Also please pray for the LTAC/hospital situation — it’s the hospital’s and insurance’s decision, not mine, but I want him placed where he can get the best treatment. Thank you!

November 1, 2021 at 1:19 pmMonday, November 1 — Day 46/47 with Covid, Day 39 in hospital, Day 31 in ICU, Day 7 with trach
A setback day.
Walter’s vent is still at 60%/8, and he currently isn’t making the progress they need him to make. They’re going to start him on a steroid to see if that kickstarts his lungs, but they said that sometimes steroids don’t work.
He has a fever of 100.3 and his white blood cell count is up to 19.8 He isn’t on any antibiotics right now because they’re waiting for the culture they ran yesterday to show them which one he needs.
His lung x-ray shows a “new questionable area of cystic change”; they will watch it.
I spoke with 2 doctors and 2 nurses today. They all seem to think that, while he is not doing fantastic right now and he is definitely not out of the woods, it isn’t time to panic. It’s time to let him rest for a couple of days and allow the antibiotic to work once they start him on it, and also to allow the steroid time to work.
They say that overall he’s still holding steady and it’s all just part of the roller coaster.
I ‘ve said it before and I’ve said it again — I’ve never liked roller coasters. Walt is the one who likes them. I’m more of a Tilt-a-Whirl girl.
Please pray that they can find the infection and effectively and quickly treat it, that the steroids will do what they need to do and reduce his dependence on the vent so that we can move forward, that the ‘questionable area’ will go away, that I will accept their word about him holding steady and stay calm (I’ve overheard them deliver bad news and know they do it when they need to, so I need to relax and trust them), that the medical team would have wisdom, direction, and the energy they need (their jobs are hard!), and that the decision regarding LTAC/hospital would be the best one for Walt.

November 2, 2021 at 11:55 amTuesday, November 2 — Day 47/48 with Covid, Day 40 in the hospital, Day 32 in ICU, Day 8 with trach.
A better day today! When I got there, I was THRILLED to see that Walter’s vent settings were 60%/6 PEEP and that his pulse ox was 98!!! I have NEVER seen such good readings! This is only the second time I’ve ever seen his PEEP at 6 (it didn’t last long), and I have never seen his oxygen at 98.
Right after I got there, they decided to try him on 50%/5 PEEP. His oxygen hung out at about 94 for a while, but had fallen to a range of 89-92 by the time I left. Still, these are lower settings than I have seen him on, and he was tolerating them!
They did start him on a steroid yesterday and are hopeful that this is response to that. The doctor told me there’s not a lot of history using this steroid for Covid patients, but that it works quite well for people with other lung issues and looks promising for Covid. It appears that it’s reducing the inflammation some and allowing the vent to be set lower. This what we want!
If he can get down into the 40s and tolerate it, then they will begin waking him.
They most likely won’t run a Covid test on him again until around Thursday, and then he’ll still need to get two negatives before I can go into his room. The chaplain told me she asked about Walt’s negative/positive, negative/positive results, and she was told that there is a high rate of false negatives, so they require two readings in a row.
He had not been running a fever all morning, but I had a feeling he was (Walt’s a hot natured guy, but doesn’t generally have a sweaty forehead — and he had a sweaty forehead), and when she checked it again it was 100.3 (or 100.8? I don’t remember what she said.) They are still waiting on the culture to show something so they know what to treat it with other than Tylenol. His WBC had fallen a bit, from 19.8 yesterday to 18.9 today.
And the Covid roller coaster continues. I’m so thankful for the good days!
Please pray for the infection to be healed and for his lungs to soften, that he would continue to be able to tolerate increasingly low settings on the vent so we can begin the process of waking up, for two consecutive negative tests so I can go in his room, for wisdom and direction on the part of his wonderful medical team, and for the LTAC/hospital decision (beyond our control) will be the one that is the best for Walt.

November 3, 2021 at 12:18 pmWednesday, November 3 — Day 48/49 with Covid, Day 41 in the hospital, Day 33 in ICU, Day 9 with trach The roller coaster continues! Yesterday I posted a great update, and then a few hours later I posted a terrible one. And that terrible one is what I went to bed and tried to sleep with. I didn’t hear anything this morning — I saw in his records that Walter had had an x-ray at 3-something this morning, so I knew he was still alive then, but that’s all I knew. In the car on the way over, I was praying that a good nurse would be working. Most of them are amazing — friendly and helpful and really just terrific. There are a few that are useless from a help-a-family-member-out-a-little perspective. And I needed one who would kindly and honestly tell me everything she knew. When I was in the elevator on the way up to ICU, his primary doctor called me and said that he was ‘perking up’ from yesterday. When I got to the window in front of his room, I was greeted by my very favorite nurse of his. She is always super informative and has voluntarily called me in the afternoons to let me know changes in his progress. The palliative care doctor also walked up (she’s amazing, too), and they both filled me in on his progress. His vent settings are currently 55%, PEEP 5, and his oxygen is holding steady at about 90 (I saw 89-95 while I was there, but it was usually 90). He is managing that even with his sepsis. If he keeps up this progress, they’ll start reducing his sedation, and we’ll work toward waking up (they tell me that sooooo often — hopefully soon it’s going to actually happen! He is stable, even with his sepsis. They’ve found the source of infection — it’s the same bacteria in his lungs that he had before. He ended his antibiotic on the 27th and began running a low-grade fever on the 31st, but the culture didn’t come back until today. They are now treating him with the appropriate antibiotic (along with other broad-spectrum antibiotics, which they started yesterday), and he appears to be responding to them. His primary doctor told me on the phone, “He’s doing better. He was scaring me yesterday.” When I asked the palliative care doctor and the nurse if I could un-panic, the doctor said, “Absolutely. You can un-panic. He’s responding.” His white blood cell count is way up at 28.4, but she said that isn’t all that surprising between the steroid and the infection. The amazing nurse offered to let me have a Zoom call this afternoon when I get home from school. I’m super excited about that. I have a couple of songs I want to play for him, rather than just reading the lyrics like I’ve been doing in the hall. (THIS IS THE SOUND OF HARD LUNGS SOFTENING!!!) (Please don’t contact me from 4:30-until-whenever-they-make-me-hang-up. I’ll be busy.) Please pray that the infection throughout his body would continue to respond and would clear up entirely, that the infection in his lungs would clear up, for softening of the lungs, that his other organs and systems would continue to remain healthy and strong, for wisdom and direction and rest for his medical team, that he can get two consecutive negative tests so I can actually go into his room during regular visiting hours, and that the LTAC vs hospital decision, when it’s made, would be the best one for Walt. And probably for other things that I’m forgetting. This list is starting to get long. 😉 Thank you, everyone, for all of your prayers and support. I can feel them holding us up.
