October 17, 2021 at 6:26 pmSunday, October 17 — Day 31/32 of Covid, Day 24 in the hospital, Day 17 on vent. My family came to visit this weekend, and my mom was allowed to go back with me. It’s always nice to have company along! She read him yesterday’s Oswald Chambers (we couldn’t talk yesterday because of dead batteries) and caught him up on life. She reminded him of the time he and my brother picked her up, put her in a shopping cart in the parking lot, and wheeled her all the way into WalMart before abandoning her in the clothing department, where she fell onto the floor when she tried to climb out while my dad and I just laughed. We do like to party hard around here. He was still on his back when we saw him today, with oxygen at 70%, pressure at 10, and pulse ox of 90-91 while I was there. That’s a full 48 hours on his back, which seems to my uneducated mind to be tremendous progress over last week, when they were having to flip him back to his stomach immediately every time due to falling pulse ox levels. The nurse told me that they’ll be flipping him back on his stomach today. She’s a traveler as opposed to one of his regulars, and she didn’t seem to know a whole lot more than that. His x-ray continues to show large amounts of infection in his lungs, but at least the last couple have said they have ‘not significantly changed since prior study’. I hope that’s good news, as all of his previous x-rays mentioned increased infection. I’m hoping that means it’s slowing and stopping, and now we can start heading the other direction. Again, I’m uneducated here; I only know what I hope it means, and I’ve only seen the x-ray results because I’ve checked his chart online and read the summary. All of his stats in his lab report have just barely changed either one direction or the other since yesterday, and the few that mean something to me have gone the right direction, with the exception of white blood cell count, which has only gone up 0.1 and is not as high as it was when it peaked last week. One of my regular prayers is that everything they test, across the board, looks better today than it did yesterday. They test a ton of things; most of them are Greek to me, but I can say that there were no drastic changes in anything today. I don’t know if he was running a fever, but I do know there wasn’t a fan blowing on him, and there usually is if he’s got one. I missed the doctor’s call while I was with Walt (phone on silent in the ICU). He left a message just to let me know that he was trying to call with his daily update and said I was welcome to call him back. I’ve tried 4 times and haven’t gotten either an answer or a way to leave a message. I’ll keep trying, but I do understand that it’s Sunday and that a man is entitled to not be tied to his phone every minute. In other words, not a lot of specific news right now. I do think it’s good that he was able to be on his back for that long. When I got there today, the chaplain told me I’d have to wait a while, as his roommate’s family was already there to visit and they were receiving ‘devastating news’. He looks considerably younger than Walt. A friend who was going to make a clergy visit to Walt this afternoon told me that the visit was canceled by the chaplain because the roommate’s family would be there then; it’s my guess that they’re saying goodbye. Thank you for your continued prayers. Please pray for the infection to leave Walt’s lungs, for his lungs to soften so he can breathe, for protection of his other organs and all bodily systems, and for Mr. Williams’ family (I don’t know his first name) as they say goodbye to him.

October 18, 2021 at 1:45 pmMonday, October 18 — Day 32/33 of Covid, Day 25 in the hospital, Day 18 on vent. He was on his tummy when I got there today. His vent was set at 55%, pressure 10. His pulse ox was holding steady at 94. All of his stats were very similar to yesterday. That’s three days in a row with no drastic changes in anything. The ICU doctor says his kidneys and liver are both looking good. He made sure I understood that Walt’s an extremely sick man who is in critical condition, but within that context, he’s holding steady. I haven’t heard from his primary doctor yet. He usually calls at some point between 10-4. Sadly, Mr. Williams did pass away yesterday. Please continue to pray that the infections in Walt’s lungs would clear up and that his lungs would soften, for continued health in all of his other organs and systems, for the medical team taking care of him, and for Mr Williams’ family as they grieve. Thank you!

October 19, 2021 at 12:16 pmUPDATE: THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL YOUR PRAYERS!! 🙏🙏 Tuesday, October 19 — Day 33/34 of Covid, Day 26 in the hospital, Day 19 on vent. Today’s update is a lesson in bedside manners. When I got there this morning, he had just been flipped on his back and had an x-ray taken. At 6:00 am, when he was on his tummy, his vent settings were at 50%, PEEP (pressure) 8. When I asked the nurse what the settings were with him just having been flipped onto his back, she said, “Well, they’re currently 80% and 10, but I need to educate you on what these numbers mean. They don’t sound bad, but Mr. Griggs is much worse than they sound because his lungs are just awful. They’re terrible. You can’t base anything on the vent settings with lungs that bad.” She talked a bit more and made me feel as if I should just pull up a chair and watch Walt die. Thankfully, his primary doctor called me about 2 minutes later. He said Walt is still holding steady. The numbers on the vent always go up when they flip him onto his back, and he fully expects to be able to wean him down to lower numbers over the course of the day. His liver looks good, his kidneys look good, his labs look good, and his bloodwork looks good. They’ve switched his antibiotics again and his rash is improving. They haven’t needed to run any new cultures. I asked if the x-ray result was in yet, and he said there’s basically no change from last time. His feeding tube came out, and they’ve given him a new one. He summed it up by saying, “Basically, today is all about maintenance.” And that sounds much better than what the nurse said! Yes, his lungs are definitely the biggest problem. I’m not sure if the infection is still growing, but I do know it isn’t increasing, and I do know it’s significant. Otherwise, Walt is strong and healthy and is fighting right now. Please pray for the infection to leave his lungs, for his lungs to soften so he can breathe, for the rest of his body to stay healthy, and for his medical team. We greatly appreciate everyone’s well wishes to us and the prayers you are praying on his behalf.

October 20, 2021 at 12:30 pmFather, thank You for the excellent care that Pastor Walt has been receiving. Bless his doctors with wisdom, and the medical staff who are attending to his physical needs. For they are true hero’s who stand daily fighting against this curse of a virus. Give his nurses wisdom also, so they know how to maintain a better bedside manner, by choosing their words better when speaking to concerned family members about their loved ones condition. We pray a prayer of thanksgiving Father for bringing Pastor Walt this far in his recovery. We continue to hold firm to our faith. and confess boldly. That through Your Devine providence, along with all the prayers of the Saints that have been prayed for Pastor Walt. That he will arise whole, and well from this ordeal. He will not die, but will live — to declare the works of the LORD (Psa. 118:17). We confess, he will arise from his bed of illness, (Psa. 41:3). and live to preach another day.
We pray, in JESUS mighty, and highly exalted! NAME. Amen! 💓

October 20, 2021 at 3:04 pmUPDATES FROM HIS BRIDE…
Wednesday, October 20 — Day 34/35 of Covid, Day 27 in the hospital, Day 19 on vent.
He was on his back when I got there with his vent set at 80% and his PEEP at 8. His pulse ox was hanging out at 92. The nurse (different one, thankfully) told me he was planning to talk to the respiratory therapist after I left about lowering it to see if he can handle it. He had also lowered his sedation just a bit, and Walt seemed to be tolerating that.
The doctor in ICU says the rest of his body is still doing great, but he needs to start showing improvement in his lungs. If not, the other organs will start to be deprived of oxygen. His lungs are stiff and have a lot of infection in them. They won’t be doing the trach on day 21 as anticipated because his lungs aren’t ready for it yet. It’s good that his body is strong and healthy, because all the other organs/systems/labs/bloodwork need to hang on until his lungs start to improve.
Please pray for healing in his lungs. As the nurse said, “Everything else is great. If we could just switch out his lungs, he really wouldn’t have any problems at all.” Please pray that the infection would leave and that his lungs would soften so that he can begin to heal. Also please pray for continued health for his other organs and systems and for his medical team; they really do have a tremendously difficult job.spiritdoc1Prayers: 39856Requests: 2379

October 21, 2021 at 6:49 pmUPDATES FROM PASTOR WALT’S BRIDE (& also a teacher)
Thursday, October 21 — Day 35/36 of Covid, Day 28 in hospital, Day 20 on vent.
Sorry about the very abbreviated update earlier today — my students were requiring all hands when I got back, so I had to wait.
He stayed on his back all night, but they flipped him prone again this morning because he was tired. His oxygen had been 70%, PEEP 8 on his back and was still 70%, PEEP 8 on his tummy when I got there. When a friend went by for a clergy visit a few hours later, it had been lowered to 55%/8. He’s still on his stomach.
They lowered his level of sedation just a bit yesterday to see how he would handle it, but he started trying to breathe over the vent, which is a no-no, so they increased it again; he remains fully sedated.
No real change since yesterday in stats or x-rays. That’s good for his stats, as all of his organs, bloodwork, and lab work are looking like they should. They keep telling me that it’s a blessing that he is such a strong and healthy man, in general. Though it’s good that his x-rays show that his lungs aren’t currently getting noticeably worse, they aren’t getting noticeably better yet, either.
My friend who went on the clergy visit said his hair’s getting long (he hates that because it gets frizzy and he can’t control it), though I can’t really see a difference yet from my limited side view.
🙏 Please pray for the infection to leave his lungs and for the lungs to soften up, as well as for the antibiotics to work (they keep switching them out in an attempt to find one he’ll respond to), for his organs, labs, and bloodwork to keep holding strong, and for his medical team.
Thank you!MarianneL1Prayers: 1733Requests: 11
October 21, 2021 at 8:03 pmIn Jesus name we lift Pastor Walt before you Lord. We ask that that the virus that has invaded his body be eliminated and his health and strength restored. Let the doctors have wisdom in determining which antibiotic to give him. And may that antibiotic will work swiftly on the pneumonia. We ask for his total and complete healing. Amen.

October 22, 2021 at 5:35 pmDay 36/37 of Covid, Day 29 in hospital, Day 21 in ICU. He was on his belly when I got there today, with vent settings of 55%/8 and a pulse ox of 94. They’re going to keep him on his tummy today and see if they can go down from 55 (since his pulse ox is steady and good). Everything is holding steady from yesterday as far as his organs, systems, labs, and bloodwork go. He needs to get to where he can do as well on his back as he does on his belly, but for the first time they mentioned that his tummy numbers are good enough that if he can manage the same on his back, then they may consider a trach as early as some time next week. They said I shouldn’t get my hopes up, but those tummy numbers suggest that it possibly could happen. It’s the first time they’ve mentioned it as a real possibility. I never would have imagined a day when I could have considered a trach a good thing, but the Covid ICU world, it’s a huge step. Overall, I’m going to say it was a tentatively positive visit. His lungs seriously still need to decide to cooperate before we can move on, but for the very first time since the day he went to ICU, there was some talk of next steps. Please pray for healing of the infection in his lungs, for softening of his lungs, that he would respond to his antibiotics (he’s currently on 3), for continued health for all of his organs, bodily systems, bloodwork, and labs, and for his medical team. Thank you!

October 23, 2021 at 12:10 pmUPDATE 10/23/2021 THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERS. PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR HIS BRIDE AND FAMILY, AS WELL, AS HE CONTINUES IN THE ICU AT THE HOSPITAL. THANKS
Day 37/38 of Covid, Day 30 in the hospital, Day 22 in ICU.
When I got there today, he was on his belly, as I expected based on what they told me yesterday. His vent setting was at 45%, PEEP 8, and he was maintaining low 90s for his pulse ox. The nurse said it had been at 50%/8/94 — with the 94 pulse ox, she decided to give 45% a shot. This was the lowest I’ve seen his vent setting so far, so that made me happy.
All organs, systems, labs, and bloodwork are holding steady. Unfortunately, this includes his white blood cell count, but holding steady is certainly better by far than going in the wrong direction.
It’s been a couple of days since he’s had an x-ray of his lungs; he’ll get another one here in a couple of hours. It really needs to show improvement.
The nurse was helpful and friendly. She told me that she has reduced his paralytic by almost half, and he seems to be tolerating it well. It’s been on high this whole time because he’s, ahem, “really strong and doesn’t like us messing with him”. 🤣 She expects that it will have to increase when they flip him to his back, but he seems content to lie on his stomach and not try to bother anyone. She said the fact that she’s been able to reduce it, even just on his belly, is a good sign and a nice baby step.
When they flip him over for his x-ray, they’re also going to move him to the other bed. I didn’t know this, but the bed he’s in isn’t even an ICU bed (they look exactly the same to my untrained eye). She said he’d be much more comfortable for the wake-up if they can move him to an ICU bed — they’re bigger, more comfortable, and have more tricks. (I have a picture of Walt taken a couple of years ago in a regular bed for a routine colonoscopy, and his arms are up on the rails because they wouldn’t fit between them. He was fussing about needing wider armrests. I was like, dude, those aren’t even armrests.)
This also means he’ll be much closer to me, physically, and I’ll be able to see him better.
I like to go at 10:00 on weekends instead of the 10:30 I have to keep during the school week because weekends are slower and they’ll usually let me stay all the way until visiting hours close at 11:00. This was a new chaplain today, though, and she was a stickler for the rules. (I’m also a stickler, but I was hoping she’d unstickle a little bit.) Maybe tomorrow.
Please continue to pray that the infection in the lungs will clear and that his lungs would soften. Pray for improvement on today’s x-ray. Pray for continued health and strength in his other organs, systems, bloodwork, and lab results. Pray that he tolerates being on his back so we can look down the road a bit. Pray that his doctors and nurses would have wisdom and rest (they work hard!) as they direct his treatment.
Thank you!GCOGAPrayers: 16482Requests: 1260
October 23, 2021 at 12:42 pmContinually praying for a Turnaround for Pastor Walt. My heart also reaches out to his bride as she juggles between the ICU and coping with the rigours of work and endless anxiety of what is coming. Joy is coming in the name of Jesus. Amen. We trust In the Power of a good good Father who loves and cares for His own. Trying to imagine being flipped on one side to the other and sometimes in pain and discomfort having been in the hospital myself for couple weeks before, So I imagine and know that pain on the inside. God will turn this around for his good and for a powerful testimony. I am praying daily for Pastor Walt and we know that all the Saints are also interceding. Gods peace rest with you. Amen and amen 🙏 Gods Chosen One GA
