October 23, 2021 at 10:10 pmI found this added on Pastor Walt’s Fbook page. Lorna (bride) posted it earlier.
They have been married 31 years this year and have 3 grown children. 💖 I copy and paste what she writes. 🙏 Also, Pastor Walt has been one of many of the pastors I have sat under. He has a heart after God. 🙏 Just so the ones just finding this post will know…Call from the doctor, Saturday 5:30pm — oxygen levels are better, seems to be improving, still a very sick man, but “cautiously optimistic”!

October 24, 2021 at 12:51 pmUPDATE 10/24/2021
Sunday, October 24 — Day 38/39 of Covid, Day 31 in the hospital, Day 23 in ICU
It seems hard to learn much on Sundays. It’s quiet around there, and this morning’s nurse wasn’t volunteering much information.
Here’s what I know —
He has been on his back since yesterday at about this time. His vent setting was 65%, PEEP 8 when I arrived, and his pulse ox was holding steady at 93/94. The goal is to be able to keep him on his back and for him to tolerate both a lower percentage and a lower PEEP so they can put the trach in — but for now he is holding steady at 65/8. He was at 60 this morning at 6:00 (when they recorded it on the paper that hangs on the window). I did figure out how to read his current vent settings on the machine closest to me, now that it’s close enough to me to be able to read it, so I won’t have to ask any longer.
I haven’t seen the results of his 4am x-ray, but his white blood cell counts have dropped below 20 (18.7) for the first time in well over a week (they’d been hanging out between 22-24, and have been 21.something the past two days), so I’m hopeful that he’s improving and that the antibiotics are helping the bacterial pneumonia (which he has along with Covid pneumonia).
His body is holding strong as far as his other organs and systems go, and his labs are holding steady.
They moved him over to the window so he’s closer to me, and my view is a lot better. I appreciate that. He’s now in an ICU bed and finally has more room for his shoulders and arms, plus they tell me it’s just a more comfortable bed, overall.
That’s really all I know to tell, so I will continue to ask for prayer for all infections to leave his lungs, for soft lungs, for continued health for the rest of his body/labs, for his ability to remain on his back and to tolerate (not just tolerate — do well with!) lower vent settings so we can move on to the next phase of healing, and for wisdom and rest for his entire medical team.
Thank you!!!goingupsoonPrayers: 20097Requests: 1132

October 24, 2021 at 10:58 pmvictortconyers, thank you. Paster Walt is still in this medically induced coma, still. The ICU nurses are turning him, trying to get him on his back.. more than his stomach. The idea is he has to be able to tolerate being on his back… his bride says it’s Not where he wants to be, that he doesn’t like being on his back.. At first, his dependence on the oxygen was almost completely. It is better now. PTL.. He is making baby steps 🙌 Lungs are still hard, 🙏 they soften. 🙏 He’s fighting an infection in his lungs also. 🙏 THANK YOU ALL FOR PRAYERS

October 25, 2021 at 11:10 amI FOUND THIS WHERE HIS BRIDE POSTED THIS ON HIS FACEBOOK PAGE AT ABOUT 5 AM THIS MORNING. GOOD DESCRIPTION OF PASTOR WALT…. WANTED TO SHARE HIS HEART….. As I reread all of the messages people have asked me to read to Walt, a common theme that’s showing up is his heart — his heart for kids, his heart for youth, his heart for the elderly, his heart for people in general, his heart for missions, and on and on — one person said that they’d break a finger if they poked him in the stomach, but they didn’t know anyone with a softer heart — another person said they’re praying that his lungs become as soft as his heart — heart, heart, heart. There’s definitely a pattern here. And he does have a big heart. He even has a big heart for teenagers, and, to me, that’s the hardest group to have a heart for. Though I know and love many individually, I’m not a particular fan of them in large numbers. But Walt is, because Walt is a fan of everybody. 1994 was his first summer pastoring a church. He wasn’t much more than a teenager, himself. Youth camp time rolled around, and we had teens who wanted to go. It was easy to find women sponsors to go with them, but it’s always harder to find men. While there are usually enough SAHMs in a congregation to take care of finding women who can leave home for a week, most men work, and that would require a week of vacation. And who wants to spend a week of one’s vacation on smelly people with attitudes? (I wouldn’t.) Walt didn’t want the kids to miss camp, so he decided to take them himself. I’m sure he didn’t realize then that he was setting the tone for every single summer of his life from 1994 – 2020 (he only missed this year because camp is popular and was booked solid before we registered — you snooze, you lose.). Since youth camp is for ages 12-18, the oldest kids he was ever a counselor for are now 45, and the youngest are 13. That’s a 32 year spread. He has fellow pastors for whom he was a camp counselor. They’re his peers now. He has had children of past campers as campers. And it seems that we can’t go out in public throughout most of Texas without someone coming up to him and saying that he was their counselor back in 1997 . . . or 2003 . . . or 2010 . . . and that he really affected their life because of such-and-such that happened that year and because of the example he set. And even as he has matured and acquired more duties, he has always taken a week off for camp and for the teenagers in his life. He went when he was the sectional youth representative in his 20s. He went as a sectional committeeman in his 30s. He went as sectional presbyter in his 40s. He went as regional executive presbyter in his 50s (well, once in his 50s; he’s only 51, and I already mentioned that he missed this year). For the past several years, I’ve (semi) jokingly told him that it’s time to pass the baton. When the first kids you took have kids who are now too old for camp, you’re kind of old. But he doesn’t listen. He loves it. He loves hanging with the kids. He loves goofing off with them. He loves praying with them. He loves affecting their lives in a positive manner. And, really, that’s Walt in a nutshell. He has a big heart, and he loves. *************** Lakeview Camp, Maypearl, Texas, 2012.. October 25, 2021 at 12:50 pmMonday, October 25, 2021 — Day 39/40 of Covid, Day 32 in the hospital, and Day 24 in ICU. Today we got the best report we’ve gotten so far!!! He was on his back with the vent at 50 and the PEEP at 8, and he was running a pulse ox of 90-92. His white blood cell count has fallen just a bit more to 17.6, and all of his other labs look good. The nurse told me he’s doing great, and then the doctor came separately and also told me he’s doing great. He’s ready for the trach as soon as they schedule it. The doctor who does it is coming on for the week this afternoon, so I’m to wait for a phone call. He’ll have the trach in his throat and a tube going into his abdomen for feeding. This should help him with his breathing, reduce his need for sedation, and reduce the damage done from the vent. They also started talking about starting to wake him up (not any time terribly soon, I don’t believe) and about graduating to the long-term care facility (also not any time soon). The doctor told me that we’ve gone from tiny little baby steps to slightly bigger steps. Please continue to pray that his medical team would have wisdom, that the infections would leave his lungs, that his lungs would soften, that his other organs and systems would continue to be healthy, and that he continues to do well on his back so that we can proceed with getting better. Thank you!

October 26, 2021 at 11:53 amUPDATES – PRAISE REPORT – ONE STEP CLOSER
BRIDE PUT OUT AS THINGS HAPPENING ON THIS UPDATE… 10/26/215:20AM (CST) … I got a call from the hospital yesterday telling me to expect a phone call either last night or this morning asking for my consent for Walt’s tracheostomy, which is scheduled for today. When I mentioned that I’m a teacher, they said the doctor would be certain to call last night so as not to interrupt my class. He didn’t, so I’m expecting it this morning. Not sure if I’ll be able to see Walt today or not; I’m only allowed into ICU at 10:30, and I don’t know what time the surgery will be.
Please pray that the procedure goes smoothly and that it does what it’s supposed to do (and for me as I continue on this roller coaster).
Update to the update — still no phone call (it’s only 6:30), but I got an email that the procedure is scheduled for 10:00 and that they’ve allotted 2 hours for it. Looks like I will have to miss a day, but I’m glad we’re making progress!7:51AM … Got the call for consent. (For the record, I’m not a fan of making his health care decisions for him.) Tracheostomy on for 10:00 (Central).
They’ll call afterward to let me know how it went and have said I should be able to go up this afternoon to see him.
Prayers for Walt, for his medical team, and for me are all appreciated.
Thank you!9:55AM … Surgery Over and Successful!
PRAISE THE LORD!! AGAIN, THANK YOU ALL, FAMILY, FOR ALL YOUR PRAYERS 🙏🙏🙌🙌

October 26, 2021 at 1:31 pmFather, please place your healing hand upon Pastor Walt. Please heal his body of this Covid pneumonia in its entirety, Lord. Allow Pastor Walt to recover completely so that he may continue your work in spreading the good news. Heavenly Father I ask you keep his family close to you, and give them strength and understanding as they face this virus. I pray Pastor Walt knows how much he’s loved and so many wish they can be with him physically next to his side as he’s in the hospital. I pray for you to please erase any pain, fear, anxiety of this entire family, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen 🙏🏼

October 26, 2021 at 8:41 pmUPDATE:
Tuesday, October 26 — Day 40/41 with Covid, Day 33 in the hospital, Day 25 in ICU, Day 1 with trach
Thankfully, they called to let me know that surgery was over at 9:50 this morning, which is exactly the same time I usually have to leave to go see him. I grabbed my keys and told my wonderful aides that I’d be back! That’s why my original status about it being done was so brief — I was hitting the road!
When I got there, his vent was set at 60%/8 PEEP, and he was holding at about 92 pulse ox. Since it was only half an hour since his surgery had finished, they said that was good. The nurse moved it to 55/8, and his pulse ox went to 89/90. That’s where it was when I left.
The doctor said it went well. He was originally supposed to have his abdominal feeding tube inserted today, also, but the doctor who does that had something come up, so it’s been rescheduled for tomorrow.
The sticky from the vent kind of thinned out the hair on his face and most of that is gone, so now he has a ridiculously bushy goatee growing in the area that was covered by the vent. His face is red and raw from the vent being there. They say he has sores in and around his mouth — but his mouth is free for the first time in 25 days. It was good to see it!
The doctor said a case manager will be contacting me about moving him to a long term acute care center, most likely in Abilene (we don’t have one here).
And this is kind of ironic, but they tested him for Covid today and he tested negative. 😉
That’s all I know.
Please continue to pray for the infections to leave his lungs (he has bacterial pneumonia in addition to Covid pneumonia), for his lungs to soften, for him to do well now that he’s on the trach, for his other stats to continue to be strong and healthy, and for his medical team who is treating him. We’ve reached a milestone, but he still has a long way to go. Thank you!C.Wink.2010Prayers: 276Requests: 51

October 27, 2021 at 2:54 pmWednesday, October 27 — Day 41/42 with Covid, Day 34 in the hospital, Day 26 in ICU, Day 2 with trach
A mixed bag of good and bad today.
The Good — he was maintaining 50%/8PEEP on his vent and running between 89-92 on his oxygen while I was there. 89-92 isn’t fantastic, but it works, and it’s a tremendous improvement from a week or two ago, when he was doing well to be on his back at all and needing to be flipped on his tummy for days at a time.
His white blood cell count has fallen to 16.0. This is the lowest it’s been since he went into the hospital.
The Bad — his x-rays are still looking really bad.
He tested positive for Covid this morning. Had he tested negative today, it would have been two days in a row, so they would have moved him to a regular ICU room and I would be allowed into his room during regular ICU visiting hours, whatever those are. They said they’ll give it about a week and try again. Until he tests negative two days in a row, I’m locked into the 10:30 visiting time and my walkie-talkie visits — which I am tremendously thankful for. I would just be more tremendously thankful to actually go into his room at more convenient times. 😉
The Mixed — our insurance won’t cover an LTAC, so they won’t send him to one; he will be staying at the current hospital instead. This is bad because, obviously, we wanted the insurance to cover it. The silver lining is he won’t be 100 miles away (I don’t actually know that there is a silver lining because I don’t know enough about it; I’m choosing to make that my silver lining). They will go ahead and start him on physical therapy without waiting for the transfer. They’ll move him to a room out of ICU as soon as he’s able.
The news — He’ll scheduled to get his feeding tube (peg) here in about 10 minutes (noon). Once that’s done, tomorrow or the next day they’ll begin reducing his sedation and paralytic and see how he starts to wake up.
Please pray for healing and softening of his lungs, for strength and health for the rest of his body, and for wisdom and rest on the part of his health team. Thank you!
(I don’t even know that this makes any sense. My kids are needing a fair amount of attention right now, so it might not. I’ll come back later when I can proofread.) 😉goingupsoonPrayers: 20097Requests: 1132

October 28, 2021 at 5:31 pmThursday, October 28 — Day 42/43 of Covid, Day 35 in the hospital, Day 27 in ICU, and Day 3 with trach — A good report today!!! His vent was set at 60%/8 (up from 50% yesterday, but the doctor seemed cool with it) and pulse ox was 92-93. While there’s still no change in his x-ray, his white blood cell count is down a little bit again today, to 15.6 (16 yesterday, but 24 last week, so good progress overall). They removed his paralytic completely this morning at 4:00 and he’s tolerating it well. They have him restrained. They’ll start decreasing his sedation and starting the process of waking him up tomorrow!!! He had physical therapy this morning, which I’m guessing was just the physical therapist moving his arms and legs around. I met his primary doctor in person today for the first time, and found him very friendly and helpful. He let me watch him examine Walt and talked to me again after (my walkie talkie and I are still hanging out in the hallway). For the first time ever, he used the word ‘optimistic’ without prefacing it with ‘cautiously’!!! I haven’t heard from the case worker yet with a final say on the LTAC, but the doctor said he has seen a note on Walt’s chart saying that the insurance won’t cover it. He also said that since we don’t have LTAC coverage, they’ll move him to the south campus (old Community Hospital) for his rehab. Since it’s much closer to my work, I’m cool with that. Please pray for continued healing of his lungs, continuing health of his organs and systems while he heals, and wisdom for his medical team. Thank you! AGAIN, THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR PRAYERS 🙏🙏🙏 🙌🙌🙌
